Bed Bug Increase in Rochester

September 10, 2010

Rochester, NY-- They're the size of an apple seed yet they're causing a major problem throughout Greater Rochester. We're talking about bed bugs.

"We're doing far more bed bugs than we've ever done before," said Flower City Pest Elimination Operations Manager Chris Sackett.

Sackett says they field about 15-20 bed bug related calls a week.

In fact, the problem has become so prevelant, they've hired two addition workers devoted to rooting out bed bugs.

"We're finding it in every economic level throughout the community," added Sackett.

Linda Greene is the Director of Infection Prevention at Rochester General Hospital.

She too has seen an uptick in patients with bedbugs.

"They were virtually eliminated in the mid part of the century. And so, we really didn't see much about it. So, it hasn't been something that's been on people's radar until recently."

Greene says the bed bugs can be found anywhere.

That includes the floor or even your furniture.

They typically bite at night and they don't pose a serious health risk.

"People can certainly have reactions first of all, or secondary infections from the scratching and the itching that occurs."

And if you think you've got the itch--greene recommends calling your exterminator.

It's the only way to stop bed bugs from bugging you.
