Q: What are the most common pest issues that home and business owners face in the area?

A: Ants and rodents are our most common pest calls.

Q: How do the seasons affect pest activity around the Massachusetts area?

A: Each season brings out certain pests. Ants and termites in the spring, stinging insects in the summer months, and fall/winter used to mean mice, but we have seen a change in mouse activity making it a year-round pest issue now. Our winters haven't been as bad lately and aren't killing off the rodent population living outside and not in structures.

Q: What are some common signs of pest activity around homes and commercial properties?

A: For mice, it would definitely be droppings and sightings of them. With termites, most people don't know they have them until they see a termite swarm. For carpenter ants, finding the frass (the remains of the wood they leave behind as they excavate) or just seeing ant activity.

Q: When should property owners call Waltham Pest Services?

A: Anytime they have a question about dealing with pests. We will not need to get involved every time, but more than likely when we do need to treat a pest problem and the person decided to try some over-the-counter chemicals bought at a hardware store, they not only don't fully work, but in the long run, they actually make the problem worse and sometimes a more expensive solution.

Moving into our new apartment we were a little blindsided and found to have some pest issues. The first person we had from Waltham told us we had Pennsylvania carpenter ants which in the back of my head knew was most likely a lie but gave him the benefit of the doubt. He said he would come back to inspect but not much was done after (could of been the fault of the apartment management here, who knows). Once we got new apartment management we had more frequent visits from Waltham more specifically Katelyn B. I have to say she was AWESOME! She was honest which was very much appreciated because no one likes being lied to. She was truthful and told us the extent of the issue and that multiple treatments were needed. She told us the issue and what steps would be taken to resolve the issue and she followed through. Simple. She also gave some advice on what not to do to aggravate the situation and to keep us informed, which was also nice. I can’t say enough good things about her. She is the epitome of great, not just good, customer service. Exceptional. Thank you Kate!

Had a mouse (or mice?) in the ceiling of our bedroom. I chose Waltham because they were the only one that happened to have availability late the same day. I was very impressed with Katelyn (so.?). She was very knowledgeable and friendly and spent about 60-90 minutes treating every problem spot and potential entry point. I found the annual service contract to be a good deal and it’s nice to know we’ll be protected against other critters and bugs around the house.
I have been with Waltham for many years and have always been most pleased with their services. I cannot say enough good things about the technician who services the property (Craig Burke), he is always on time and does a thorough inspection. If there is a problem in between inspections it is fixed as quickly as possible. Truly a business concerned with the clients satisfaction.

Residential & commercial pest control issues in Springfield

One of the largest cities in Massachusetts, Springfield is home to many beautiful parks, great schools, and a rich history. Unfortunately, this flourishing community and surrounding areas like Pittsfield and Agawam, MA, also attract a variety of pests.

Situated on the Connecticut River, the city draws insects and rodents that live near waterways. Additionally, aging historical buildings and bustling metropolitan areas are also enticing to pests looking for an easy meal and shelter. These nuisances can lead to risks and concerns for residents' health and property.

Common Springfield & Agawam pests

Many insect pests cause headaches for home and business owners in Massachusetts. Here are a few of the most frequent offenders seen around Springfield:

  • Flies - Trash, food, and pet waste are favorite food sources and breeding spots for these insects. You may see them milling around near garbage cans, dumpsters, spoiled produce, or animal droppings. They also contribute to the spread of illnesses like tuberculosis, typhoid fever, and dysentery.
  • Cockroaches - This pest likes dark, protected areas like pantries, under cupboards and appliances, as well as near water like drains and pipes. As they scurry around, cockroaches track germs across surfaces that can make people sick and aggravate asthma symptoms. They also contaminate food and may damage fabrics and book bindings.
  • Bed Bugs - Bed bugs hitch a ride into homes, apartments, and dorms on clothing, luggage, personal items, and used furnishings. They hide on mattresses and upholstery and reproduce very quickly. Although they don't carry disease, the blood of humans and animals is their only food source. Bites leave itchy red welts on the skin.

Hazards from Rodents

Mice and rats are common in places like Springfield, MA, where there is a dense population. Many species are excellent climbers and can squeeze through tiny openings to get indoors in their search for food and water. Once inside, rodents can ruin food with their urine and feces. They may also damage woodwork, furniture, and insulation.

Rodents can also create dangers to safety and health. Because they constantly chew, these pests sometimes destroy wiring, which might lead to electrical fires. They may also expose people and their pets to harmful viruses, bacteria, and parasites, such as fleas and ticks.

Concerns in Local Businesses

Besides invading homes, pests like these can also cause major issues for companies around Springfield. Retail outlets, grocery stores, and warehouses could have products destroyed or contaminated by chewing or feces. The many diseases carried by cockroaches, flies, or rodents might also cause customers or employees to become ill.

The presence of these pests may hurt the reputations of area institutions like restaurants, causing patrons to question cleanliness standards. For Springfield hotels, reports of bed bug infestations could deter tourists, reducing occupancy and profits. Even daycare centers could lose clients if parents become concerned about the health and safety of their children.

Signs of Pests

Massachusetts businesses and residents in the Springfield area should frequently inspect for these signs to head off potential problems:

  • Damaged Packages - Check places like kitchens, bathrooms, and pantries for bags or boxes with holes, spilled food, or chew marks on shelving and packages.
  • Flying - You may see insect pests like flies buzzing near trash cans, grass clippings, animal waste, or in food prep areas.
  • Droppings - Look for small, oval-shaped fecal pellets or black spots. You may find droppings in corners, inside cabinets, under appliances, and on walls.
  • Teeth Marks or Holes - Rats and other rodents will sometimes gnaw on door frames and furniture. You might also find burrows near the outside walls of a building.
  • Sighting - Some pests, like cockroaches, are more active when it's dark. If you see a few during the day, it could be evidence of a much larger issue.

Preventing Pest Infestations

The best way to avoid any damage or illness from common pests around Springfield, MA, is to keep them from getting indoors. Fill gaps and cracks near pipes, doors, or windows and replace any screens that have tears or holes. Make sure garage and delivery entrances seal well and remain closed when not in use. Also, check that outdoor garbage bins have tight-fitting lids to discourage invaders.

Eliminating clutter is also important to reduce the number of hiding places. Picking up pet food and fixing leaky plumbing can help remove the sources of food and water that attract pests to homes and businesses. Clean up spills or messes promptly, and wash dishes to help keep them at bay.

If you feel you already have a problem, seek help as soon as possible. Most pests reproduce quickly, so it's important to address concerns right away. Contact Waltham Pest Services to arrange a free on-site inspection and consultation for your Springfield home or business. Our trained professionals can assist with infestations and work with you to prevent future issues.
