Falmouth Pest Pressure

Located on the southwestern tip of Cape Cod, Falmouth, MA, experiences a climate that is temperate and humid. With no dry season, the city gets an average of two to three inches of rain each month. Even during the colder weather of late November to mid-March, daily temperatures tend to hover around 45°F, so freezing precipitation is rare. All the moisture and humidity of the city makes it the perfect habitat for subterranean termites. Unable to survive in extreme cold or heat, termites thrive in the temperate and relatively mild climate of Falmouth with ample amounts of moist timber for the developing termite colonies. When an infestation occurs indoors, costly damage is done to the structure of the building.

Falmouth, with a population of nearly 32,000 people, is home to many pest species, as people provide insects and pest mammals with readily available food and shelter. In addition to the many ponds and creeks that help make up the city's topography, Falmouth is rife with pine and oak trees. Tree pest insects like the box-elder bug and western conifer seed bug enjoy the numerous hosts and pose a challenge for the municipality's DPW Trees, Parks, Forestry, and School Grounds Department. Additionally, these bugs will wander into homes and heated buildings during colder weather for shelter and to breed. Similarly, brown marmorated stink bugs frequently infest local homes and gardens in large numbers and are considered a nuisance pest.
