When one of our Service Managers casually comments about a fire she helped with on her route, we tend to stop and take notice. That’s what happened when Billie Moran, Service Manager at our New London Branch, did just that. We all stopped and said – WHAT? Billie said she was never in any real danger, and it wasn’t a big deal. That’s the kind of hero we want to celebrate. The one that does it without wanting or needing the accolades.
Billie finally told us the whole story. She said that while driving back from a service call, she drove by a house and noticed a small fire in the window on the left-hand side in the finished porch area. Even though someone had stopped about 30 seconds before she got there and had already called 911, Billie stopped and stayed. She asked if the person had gotten the people out. She found out nobody was answering the door. So, they both went to different doors and started banging. Billie ran around the left side of the home to the back area to where the fire was spreading and there was a big yellow lab tied to the porch. That’s when Billie jumped into action.
She was able to get the dog untied and off the porch before the fire spread to where she and the dog were, but it was a close call. Billie then ran back around front to see the people in the home were finally coming out. The other guy who was banging on the door left once he saw the people were safe. But Billie wasn’t done. She asked the homeowner if there was anyone else in the home. “He told me there were cats in the basement,” said Billie. “So, I ran around to the back of the home and into the basement trying to get the cats out.” We think that statement needs a little more emphasis: Billie ran into a burning house to help save the family’s pet cats. But cats being… cats, Billie wasn’t able to find them all. Did she just give up? No! She ran around the basement opening all the windows to hopefully give them a way out of the basement before exiting the burning home.
Billie ended up staying and waiting for the fire department to show up. Once they did, Billie stuck around for a few more minutes before leaving. Stories like these are rare in any industry. But we tend to think our team is made up of a bunch of heroes. Billie just proves our point. Billie ended by saying, “I was never in any danger personally. I was just at the right place at the right time to help get the pets and people out.” We think it’s a bit bigger than that, but we can appreciate her humble take on it. Thank you, Billie for everything you do for Waltham Pest Services, our customers, and the families that live in the neighborhoods where you work. You are truly an inspiration to us all and we’re proud to call you a member of our team.
