Pest Control, An Essential Service, Is Even More Important Than Usual Right Now

Medical, fire protection, law enforcement, and… pest control?

Yes. As a matter of fact, pest control has been an integral part of keeping the public, the food supply, and our properties healthy and safe for quite a while. It’s so important that the Department of Homeland Security has deemed it an essential service – it’s listed under Public Works. Here are a few examples of how we support public health and safety every day.

Healthcare

With the overcrowding that is happening (or is sure to come with the coronavirus) in the healthcare industry, they are already more than maxed out on the issues they can deal with. More patients entering their buildings could mean more bed bugs hitching a ride on their persons, clothes, bags, etc. Flies are extremely dangerous to the healthcare industry. They bring with them many health threats by spreading bacteria and contaminating surfaces, medical supplies, and equipment. It’s more than just important to keep up with pest control in the healthcare industry. Its integral.

Residences

Rodents can eat or at least contaminate the food you have stocked up for this self-quarantine. Cockroach and rodent allergens trigger asthma attacks in children. Bed bugs can cause an allergic reaction in many people. And that’s just three of the pests that are out there! While we are voluntarily self-quarantining and practicing practical social distancing we need our homes to be where we can kick back and not worry (as much). Nobody wants pests entering our safe havens. And it’s not just houses. Multifamily dwellings like apartments are even more at risk.

Food Processing

According to the National Pest Management Association, rodents contaminate or consume about 20% of the world’s food supply. Cockroaches carry bacteria on their feet and can transfer it onto whatever they walk on (your food and surfaces). But because Drain Flies seem like just a buzzing nuisance, people tend to forget that they are as filthy if not filthier than cockroaches. They are drain and garbage bin dwellers and carry about six million different bacteria. Pest control is one of the only ways to keep all that in check so that our food sources are safe and healthy and remain that way. You don’t need something else to worry about right now. Pest control can take that one off the list.

Those are just 3 examples of industries that, more than ever, need to focus on their pest control, but nobody should just forget about it. It’s clear why this service is considered essential right now. Pests can spread diseases such as West Nile virus, Lyme disease, salmonellosis, hantavirus, and encephalitis. Stinging insects force half a million people to the emergency room every year. And rodents? I mean, they consume about 20% of the world’s food supply! I feel like that stat needed to be said again because it’s just astounding.

Pest control isn’t something anyone can do. The technicians at Waltham Pest Services have been trained, tested, and certified in pest control services and they take care of pests professionally, accurately, efficiently, and safely! COVID-19 is on everyone’s mind right now, taking over our social media feeds, and dominating the news cycles. But we don’t want to forget to keep up our defenses against the diseases spread by pests. We can’t stress how important pest control is to the nation right now.
