Termites in Connecticut

Termites in CT

The most common termites in Connecticut are the Eastern subterranean species. They can go undetected in homes and businesses for years, often resulting in costly repairs. As the name suggests, these termites live in colonies underground. They get inside houses through wood that touches the ground. The pests can also move across concrete, brick, or stone using mud tubes.

Signs of Termite Infestation

Fresh mud tubes are brown in color, while older tunnels are brittle and gray. The pests use these covered pathways to stay hydrated and protected as they move to new feeding and nesting sites. Cracking open an active mud tube will cause worker termites to spill from the break. Discovering tunnels in basements or on foundations is a warning to look for damaged wood nearby.

Termites eat lumber from the inside out. Weak wooden supports, subflooring joists, or door and window frames may indicate a termite infestation. Timber that crumbles or reveals termite galleries when prodded with a screwdriver will need replacing after the colony’s removal.

Often mistaken for flying ants, swarms of male and female winged reproductives emerge each year between March and May in Connecticut. Termites swarm so they can breed and start new colonies. Seeing these insects take flight inside a building or finding their cast-off wings indoors indicates a serious issue.

Termite Deterrents

To prevent termite infestations, replace or remove any wood posts, steps, or trellises in direct contact with the soil. Also, move lumber or firewood away from building exteriors. If you have concerns about termites in Connecticut, call Waltham Pest Services or contact us for expert advice.
