Herbs that Taste Great & Keep Pests Away

We know a thing or two about pest prevention, and we’re pretty good at it! That being said we’re always happy to share a few tricks you can use around your home in between pest control treatments. In fact, some of the best tools in your pest control arsenal might already be in your spice draw or garden! Certain herbs and spices have natural repellent properties that can help keep insects at bay (all while adding a fresh scent to your home as an added bonus)! Here are some of our top recommendations:

Basil

Would you believe it’s not just for pesto? Basil is a great natural repellent for flies and mosquitoes. Whether in your herb garden, on the windowsill, or planted in pots on your patio, fresh basil can help create an aroma-defense between your home and these pests.

Peppermint

Though we love it in an iced cold beverage on a warm, sunny day, this cool and refreshing herb does double duty against houseflies, mice, and spiders. Grow fresh peppermint near doorways or use peppermint oil diluted in water to create your own pest-repelling spray.

Sage

Keeping the bad vibes of pests far away and the Thanksgiving vibes in, sage is known to repel beetles. Burning this herb is especially effective, so keeping a bundle handy when spending time outdoors, or using it dried in areas where you have previously seen beetle activity can help!

Rosemary

This hardy herb isn’t just great for roasting potatoes. It also helps repel pests like mosquitoes, moths, and ants. Whether you plant it near entryways, use it dried in sachets, or include it in a stovetop potpourri, rosemary’s scent sends a clear “keep out” message to these common pests.

Bay Leaves

Tuck a few bay leaves into your dry goods to help prevent pantry moths. The strong aroma acts as a natural repellent but remember to replace the leaves every month to keep them fresh and effective.

Thyme

Both ants and mosquitoes are turned off by thyme’s bold scent. Plant it in small pots near windows or use water-downed thyme oil in homemade repellents. Burning a few dried sprigs safely outdoors can also help keep mosquitoes at a distance during those warmer evenings out on the deck.

While natural remedies can be great for minor issues and short-term repelling, they’re not enough to handle bigger pest problems. Oftentimes, it can just make pests move to a different room. So, just be careful with relying too much on natural repellents like these. The good news is: we can help!
