Cambridge Pest Pressure

Home to more than 100,000 residents, the City of Cambridge ranks among the largest communities in Massachusetts. The residents of the city occupy a piece of land that measures less than seven square miles total, resulting in an exceptionally crowded settlement that inevitably attracts pests with all the food, water, and shelter available in such a densely populated area. In addition to the widespread availability of basic needs, the location and climate of the city each has a significant influence on the population and behavior of area pests. The city's close proximity to an important harbor, heavily travelled interstates and regional highways, and a major international airport increases the likelihood of introducing invasive pests to the area via trade and commerce, while the cooler climate and harsh winters in New England often drive local pests to seek shelter indoors.

Local pest control in Cambridge focuses on a handful of commonly encountered insects and rodents. Common pests in the area include ants, bed bugs, cockroaches, flies, mice, and rats. The city also makes a point of targeting certain invasive species such as Asian longhorn beetles, emerald ash borers, and winter moths. These particular invasive pests damage native trees and landscaping, which makes their removal a priority for the local Department of Public Works. Invasive or native, pests in the Cambridge area cause problems by infesting homes and buildings, damaging property, annoying and sometimes even injuring humans, and/or carrying communicable diseases.
