Babesiosis

What Is Babesiosis?

Babesiosis is a parasitic infection similar to malaria. It is a tick-borne illness transmitted through a bite. In New England, the most common host is the native deer tick. Babesia bacteria attack red blood cells and may cause a person to develop hemolytic anemia. This disease can be fatal if you do not receive medical treatment as soon as possible.

Babesia Symptoms

If you have a tick bite and experience signs of the flu, you may want to talk to your doctor. Some symptoms of babesiosis include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Head and body aches
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Jaundice

Babesiosis Treatment and Prevention

Early treatment of babesiosis is critical. Doctors usually prescribe a combination of antibiotics and an anti-parasite medicine. Those exposed to wooded or grassy environments run the highest risk of exposure. Wear insect repellent as a precaution, but keep in mind it is not a guarantee against these pests.

When you have a tick problem on your property, call Waltham Pest Services to remove the infestation and help keep you safe.
