Stamford Pest Pressure

The third most populous city in its state, Stamford, CT, is home to both humans and a number of insect pests. As the city is bustling with families and young children, Stamford officials take the presence and control of these nuisances very seriously, especially biting insects that can also spread disease like mosquitoes, ticks, and flies. Mosquitoes require standing water to breed, inflict itchy bites on their victims, and can even spread the dangerous West Nile virus. Ticks thrive in wooded areas and tall grass. They latch onto unsuspecting individuals or pets and spread a number of diseases, most notably Lyme disease. Though not all species of flies bite, they are very dirty insects and contribute to the spread of over 60 different diseases, including typhoid fever, dysentery, cholera, and food poisoning.

Located only 30 miles from Manhattan, Stamford is considered part of the greater New York metropolitan area. Dense populations and consistent tourism in the city make bed bugs a notable pest issue. Bed bugs are carried into homes most often on clothing and luggage, live in mattress seams and headboards, and feed on people while they sleep. Additional Stamford pests include yellow jackets, cigarette beetles, carpenter ants, and the invasive Gypsy moth.
